sbobet recently introduced a premium Glass Blasted finish option for knife handles but what are the major differences between glass blasting and sandblasting?

Our glass blasted finishuses crushed glass to present a finer, tighter grain. The resultis a super scratch-resistant, smooth finish that still maintains its overallgrippy-ness. This option is now available as an upgrade for all knives with plain titanium or micarta handles.

Our signature sandblasted finishuses sand to create an extra grippy finish that wears in with character (like your favorite pair of denim or the patina on leather). This is the standard, free option available for all knives with plain titanium or micarta handles.

FAQS

Will you glass blast a knife I already own?

Yes, depending on the model!

  • All Plain Titanium and Micarta models can be glass blasted.
  • Wood Inlays:Unfortunately, we cannot re-blast existing knives with wood inlays. The process requires us to pop out the inlays before blasting and often times inlays will break, so for this reason, we don’t offer the service.
  • Computer Generated Graphics:Many CGGs can be glass-blasted. If you're not sure about the graphic you own, please contact us.
  • Unique Graphics:Glass blasting is not currently available for Uniques.

If glass blasting is available for your knife, just fill out a Service Formto receive the service. Current prices and lead times for the service are listed there too.

Can I order a new knife with glass blasted handles?

  • Yes, Plain titanium and Micarta models can be ordered with a glass blasted finish for an additional fee.
  • Computer Generated Graphics and Wood inlaid models come standard with a glass blasted finish and the cost is already integrated into the price of each knife.
  • Unique Graphics are unavailable to order with a glass blasted finish.

You canplace an order using ourOrder Form.

How does glass blast wear in vs sandblast? Will I get snail trails?

Glass blasted handles will fade and wear more evenly over time than sandblasted handles. It is possible for the finish to scratch but it tends to be more subtle than sandblasted finishes.

Sandblasted handles tend to "pocket polish" around the edges and clip and will mark or getsnail trailsmore noticeably.

Most glass blasted and sandblasted handles can be refinished.

Computer Generated Graphics (CGGs) were introduced sometime in the late 1990s on the Sebenza and Umfaan (retired), as the age of technology was really beginning to shine. Using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Machining (CAM) software, we were able to tastefully translate hand-sketched artwork into repeatable, machinable programs for the first time in our history. This opened the door for many series of collectable artwork knives for many years to come.

      Sebenza & Mnandi

Sebenza and Mnandi washers are "fit" parts, meaning that the tolerances around the pivot area are tight and require our technicians to fit the pivot assembly to each particular knife. This means that if you bend, pinch, or lose a washer, you must send your knife in to us in order to have a new pair fit to your knife. There are no exceptions to this rule, even if you live internationally.

Once your knife arrives at our shop, you can haveup to two total washer sets fit to your knife (one installed and spare), for just a few dollars. The turn-around time will vary depending on how many services are requested and how many knives are in our shop at one time.

To get started, please fill out a Service Form.

      Umnumzaan, Inkosi, and Impinda

We will send out up to two sets of Umnumzaan, Inkosi, and Impinda washers upon request. Please email crkinfo@chrisreeve.com to make a request.

      Discontinued Models

Unfortunately, we do not have stock of washers for most discontinued models. If you have a question about your particular knife, please reach out to us.

"Hold on, why isn't it opening?" It feels stiff and may even require you to open it with two hands. Maybe it's your first or your 5th CRK - either way, the action feels different on this knife. What's going on?

First, open and close the knife, even if it's with both hands, to helplube up the pivot assembly. If you still cannot open it with one hand, double check your finger placement on the knife.

Make sure your fingers (especially your index finger) are not pushing hard against the lock bar on the other side.Slide your thumb along the chamfer, pushing forward rather than sideways on the bottom of the thumb lug...

The blade will pivot around to lock in the open position. It may take a couple of times to get the hang of it, but once you do, the action should be smooth.

While we do provide tools for you to maintain your knife, we do not recommendmodifying or re-assembling itoutside of its original configuration.

WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR KNIFE APART?
      1. If the action becomes sticky
Most of the time, this issue can be solved taking the knife apart, giving it a good clean, and re-applying a small amount of fluorinated grease. If the action isn't as smooth as you'd like it to be right out of the box, give it some time to break in.Learn How to Break in New Knives.

      Anatomy of the Sebenza

These instructions apply tothe Sebenza 31, 21, Regular, Classic, and Umfaan.

      Tools

    • 5/64" Allen wrench
    • Fluorinated grease
    • Microfiber cloth
    • Paper towel (optional)
    • Lacquer thinner or Windex (optional)
    • Instructions

      1. Loosen and remove the pivot pin and screw

With the blade closed and the 5/64" wrench properly seated, loosen and remove the pivot screw. The pivot screw is the left-most screw on the front of the knife, toward the blade. Screws are always on the front of the knife and pins are on the back. Then open the knife to about 45°and use the wrench to push the pivot-pin through.

      Semenza Disassembly Step One

      2. With a little pressure on the lock bar, slip the whole blade assembly out.

Pull the blade straight out, remove each part, and set aside. The blade assembly consists of the blade, 2 phosphor-bronze washers, and the pivot bushing.

      How to step three

      3. Loosen and remove the remaining body screws.

Use a finger to hold the back body pins in place while you loosen the remaining body screws. Push the body pins out and remove the front handle face. Take note of what the inner handle assembly looks like. Use a paper towel to remove debris. Clean the pivot area really well, and if needed, use a drop of lacquer thinner or Windex to remove any remaining goo.

      Clean the pivot

      4. Re-assemble the inner handle.

Insert the back body pin first through the back handle and layer the backspacer on top. Then insert the stop-pin and layer the stop sleeve on top. Finally, add the lanyard assembly back in. Note: Should you choose to remove the lanyard on the Large Sebenza 21, you must remove the lanyard pin as well.

      Reassembly step one

      5. Apply the front handle face.

With the wrench properly seated, tighten the remaining body screws to snug.Set the handle assembly aside.

      Tighten remaining Sebenza Screws

      6.Prepare theblade assembly

Tap or massage the tube of Fluorinated Grease to ensure it is properly mixed. Put a tiny drop inside the blade pivot hole, then insert the pivot-bushing. Apply a small amount of Fluorinated Grease around the outside of the pivot hole to hold the washers. The small washer will go on the back of the blade, to accommodate the lock-bar, while the large washer will go on the front. Center the washers around the pivot hole.

      7. Insert the blade assembly into the handle assembly.

Hold the front and back washers in place using your index finger and thumb. Disengage the lock bar with your other hand. Slide the blade assembly in at about 45 until the blade hole is aligned with the pivot hole on the handle and the lock bar opens up. Do not force the blade assembly in. If you're struggling, remove the blade assembly, realign your washers, and try again. Do not loosen any part of the handle assembly. Once center-aligned, insert and tighten down the pivot pin and screw.

Note: It's very important not to bend your washers. If you do, you'll have to send your knife in for service, since washers are hand fit to each blade.

      Sebenza Assembly Step Five

      Three-point check

      • Action. The Sebenza is known for its "bank-vault" feel and sound. While opening and closing can get buttery-smooth over time, the knife is not designed to fling or fall open. If you take your finger off when opening, the blade should stop. The motion should feel hydraulic, but it should not be hard to open. If the action off, double check that your blade assembly is aligned and centered and screws are snug. If everything looks good but it doesn't feel smooth, you may just need to use your knife a few timesso that the fluorinated grease can distribute throughout the pivot.
      • Lock-up. To eye-ball check your lock-up, open the knife fully so that the lock-bar engages, palm up. Look to the end of the lock-arm where it engages the blade. The lock-arm should engage 50 - 75% of the blade tang. Older Sebenzas may have a farther lock up.
      • Blade play. Open the knife to its fully open position. Disengage the lock-bar and with the blade still open, try to wiggle the blade from side to side. If the blade wiggles, tighten the pivot screw.

Our inlays are made from stabilized wood and profiled to fit precisely inside handle pockets, for a clean finish and tight fit. Each inlay is permanently bonded to the handle by 3M VHB tape, which is the same tape used to hold together cell phones and steel frame buildings, allowing the inlays to naturally flex as wood expands and contracts. Knowing this process will help you learn how to properly care for wood inlays.

      INLAY CARE TIPS

      1. Apply polish to wood inlays
Stabilized wood requires relatively low maintenance. If needed, apply a small amount of Renaissance Wax to the inlay to protect against moisture, environmental factors, and to give it a shine.

      2. Carry lighter woods in a sheath when wearing denim
Dark or fresh denim is known to bleed and since blonde woods may pick up pigment, it's possible that your jeans may stain your knife. To avoid this, carry your knife in a sheath, or wait until you've washed your denim a few times to carry using the clip.

      3. If your knife goes through the wash..

Dry it if you can, but it's likely that you'll have to purchase replacement inlays. Send some pictures over to crkinfo@chrisreeve.com and we'll take care of you.

    • Remove oils and dirt from handles

Use a soft cloth to remove oils and dirt from the handle front. Move in the direction of the grain to avoid scratching the surface.

    • If your knife has a Damascus blade, keep it clean!

High carbon steels react quickly to moisture and acidic foods, so it's important to keep your Damascus clean and free from moisture. Gently wipe the blade usinghot soapy water and allow it to fully dry. Use a q-tip to applya very small amount of Renaissance Wax or a Micro Crystalline wax polish as an added protective barrier.

    • Deep clean the color on polished faces

Dip a q-tip in a small amount of lacquer thinner to remove oils and dirt from the anodized graphic. Take care to move with the grain of the handle to avoid scratching the polished surface. Avoid applying lacquer thinner to the edges of the handle to keep the sandblasted color consistent with the rest of the knife.

    • Carry in a sheath
To avoid scratches, carry the knife in the sheath provided. If you need a replacement, you may purchase one from our web store.

    • Store in a clean, dry place
    • Store it on your dresser, in a box - wherever's clever. If your knife is in a high humidity environment, there will need to be extra precautions when storing. Even moisture control safes can allow a blade to corrode, if silicone packets or similar are not in the safe as well. Circulating air can be the best option for humid environments.

      HOW IT'S MADE

Damascus patterns are made by forging or "folding" stainless steels and softer high carbon steel. To bring out the pattern, the blades are placed in an "acid bath." During this process, the more corrosive high-carbon steel is eaten away, leaving behind unique patterns. We then “seal” the blades using a museum-grade wax coating.

      4 DAMASCUS CARE TIPS
      • Keep Damascus clean and free of moisture. Damascus blades will require more attention, since the higher carbon metals that help create the pattern present a higher risk of corrosion. We recommend cleaning the blade after it has come into contact with moisture and especially acidic materials like apples, steak, or fingers.
      • Spot clean rust. If your knife is in a humid environment, it will rust. The best way to quickly address rust is to spotclean yourbladewith Soft Scrub and a q-tip when you first see it appear. If you can see pitting on the blade, it is especially important to keep those spots clean so that more material is not removed.
      • Protect the pattern. Apply a small amount of WD-40 or a quality oilwhen the blade is completely dry to help protect against fading and moisture. Our Damascus is chemically bonded with stainless steel and several different softer metals, so there is no need to worry about chipping or flaking, but the pattern may still wear over time from regular use.
      • Maintain the edge. Damascus will maintain its edge for quite a while, but it will dull faster than our standard S35VN blade. We recommend maintaining the edge with the Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker.

      RE-ETCHING

We can usually re-etch the pattern on a blade to bring back its definition. However, we recommend caution when choosing this route. Re-etching can only be done a few times and will shorten the life-span of the blade since the process involves removing material.

Note: We cannot re-etch discontinued models with Damascus blades since we would be unable to replace the blade if damage were to occur during the process.

If you would like to request re-etching or you are facing issues with your Damascus blade, please send your knife into our shop for service.

We recommend using the to maintain the edge on all of our folding knives, but it is important to use a method of sharpening where you feel the most comfortable. The following instructions are intended for use with CRK folding knives on the Triangle Sharpmaker.

THREE STEPS TO MAINTAINING YOUR EDGE

      1. Clean your knife
Remove any debris, goo, or residue using a soft cloth.

      2. Set the white crock sticks' sharpening angles to 40°
With the Sharpmaker system, the plastic base contains keyed holes that accurately set the sticks’ sharpening angles at a 30° (15° each side) or 40° (20° each side). We sharpen our folding knives to an 18°-20° angle, so the 40° keyed holes will do just fine. Maintain the edge of your blade frequently using the white crock sticks.

      3. Sharpen with a roll
Beginning at the widest part of the blade and moving toward the tip, make a downward motion, while rolling your hand. The blade should turn away from the crock stick, as you move around the belly toward the tip. It is important not to sharpen with a purely vertical motion as it will eventually decrease the length of the blade, leaving the knife with a thickened tip and unbalanced geometry. Move back and forth between each crock stick, maintaining light, even pressure.

It's important to note that these tips are for maintenance - if you want hair-popping-sharp, it may be time to send it in for a sharpening service instead.

THREE TIPS FOR A SMOOTHER DEPLOYMENT

      1. Distribute lube to the perforated washers
We recommend holding the handle in one hand and the blade in the other, then moving it back and forth from the closed position into a partially deployed position. This will help distribute lube throughout the perforated washers, resulting in a smoother deployment.

      2. Master the motion
Think of using a backward "C" motion using the fatty part of your thumb placed underneath the thumb lug near the handle. Our knives are designed to have more of a sliding or pushing motion, rather than a flipping or flicking motion.
      3. Clean and lube
If you feel confident that you can properly disassemble and reassemble your knife, you may clean, add a small amount of lube to your washers, reassemble, and repeat step one to distribute the lube. sbobet is not responsible for any damage caused by adjustments made outside of the factory.

If stiffness has occurred after you've disassembled your knife and still persists after trying these tips, you may have pinched a washer. To check, lay your washers on a flat surface and look for abnormalities or areas where the washer is not laying flat. If the washer is pinched, you must send your knife into the shop in order to have a replacement fit.

If you are still concerned with the difficulties you are experiencing with deployment after trying these tips, you are more than welcome to send your knife into our shop for inspection.
